Nedbank Cup Tournament Format & Prizes

The South African soccer tournament welcomes 16 Premiership teams, 8 teams from the National First Division, and 8 more teams from the SAFA Second Division.

The matches for each of the tournament’s phases, from the round of 32 up to the finals, are determined by draw. The lucky team to get drawn first receives a home-ground advantage.

The Nedbank Cup is held in a single-elimination knockout format, meaning one team must emerge victorious in each game. Therefore, if the match ends in a draw during the regular 90-minute game time, both teams will move to play in added extra time (AET) and, if necessary, penalties.

Mzansi teams participating in the tournament will be battling for the Nedbank Cup and more than R20,000,000 in prize money. Let’s have a closer look at how this prize pool is distributed:

  • 1st place team wins a whopping R7,000,000 and qualifies for next season’s CAF Confederation Cup.
  • 2nd place earn a total of R2,500,000.
  • The cash prize for teams in 3rd and 4th place is R1,000,000.
  • 5th, 6th and 7th place will be awarded with R400,000, each.
  • Teams from the 9th position up to the 16th position will receive R200,000.
  • Finally, the teams that place 17th up to 32nd will claim R100,000.

Nedbank Cup History

The tale of the South African Cup begins in 1971. Due to its different sponsors, the contest underwent multiple name changes in the following years. Some Mzansi natives might remember the tournament bearing these names during different periods:

  • Life Challenge Cup (1971 – 1975)
  • Benson and Hedges Trophy (1976 – 1977)
  • Mainstay Cup (1978 – 1987)
  • Bob Save Super Bowl (1988 – 2001; sponsored by the First National Bank; tournament not played in 1997 and 2002)
  • ABSA Cup (2003 – 2007)
  • Nedbank Cup (2008 – present)

The tournament has had many conquerors throughout its more than 50-year history. Some of the most decorated teams in the contest are the Kaizer Chiefs (13 times), Orlando Pirates (10 times), Mamelodi Sundowns (6 times), SuperSport United and Moroka Swallows (5 times).
