The South African Premiership, also known as the Premier Soccer League or Betway Premiership due to sponsorship purposes, is the highest division in South African men’s soccer. According to the Confederation of African Football ranking system, the PSL is rated fourth in Africa, with only Egypt, Morocco, and Algeria ahead.

As of the 2024/25 season, the league has 16 teams and follows a format similar to all of the Top European championships—from August to May. However, this year’s start was delayed until mid-September due to some complications with the sponsor.

The total number of rounds during the regular season is 30, which means every team has to play twice, once at home and once away, in a double round-robin format. The team that scores the highest number of points after all 240 matches will take the trophy. If any team has a tie, the goal difference becomes the main criterion for selecting the winner.

While the format seems to be pretty straightforward, let’s take a closer look at PSL, its history, structure, and, of course, where we can bet on it.

South African Premiership History

While the Premier Soccer League doesn’t have a long history, it was founded just 28 years ago, in 1996, after an agreement between the National Soccer League and former participators in the National Professional Soccer League (NPSL).

At first, the league was planned to have 18 teams in total, but after the end of the 2001/02 season, its number was reduced to 16 to avoid fixture congestion.

Only five of the founding 18 members still play in the PSL South Africa in the current season —AmaZulu, Kaizer Chiefs, Orlando Pirates, Mamelodi Sundowns, and SuperSport United.

2004 is the year when the match-fixing scandal broke out, which ended later the same year with more than 40 people arrested, including referees and team managers.

Because of its brilliant performances over the past few years, from season 2017-18, Mamelodi Sundowns has overtaken the other leading clubs, establishing itself as the sole leader.

Speaking of them, Mamelodi Sundowns has the most league titles—14. Second place is divided between Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs, with 4 titles each, followed by SuperSport United, with 3 trophies.

The clubs mentioned are not only the most successful but are also the only ones that have never been relegated and participated in all 28 Premier Division seasons.

PSL Standings 2024/2025

As we said, the Premier Soccer League is composed of 16 teams. It has a double round-robin format and a three-point system. In addition to the trophy, the teams compete against each other for CAF Champions League places, the CAF Confederation Cup, etc.

In addition to the current standing table, you can also find a complete list of the latest PSL results of every team in the competition.

As you already have hands-on experience with the table, it is time to walk you through the format and how the first teams on the table benefit from their efforts.

At the end of each season, the Premier League champion and runner-up will qualify for the CAF Champions League, and the team in third place will qualify for the CAF Confederation Cup.

At the bottom end, the team with the lowest overall performance at the end of the season will be relegated to the Motsepe Foundation championship (the second-highest league in South Africa). The championship winner will take its place.

The second-to-last in PSL, plus the second and third-placed teams of the Motsepe Championship, will enter a playoff series, with the winner also earning a promotion to the Premiership.

Premier Soccer League Football Grounds

Despite the Premier League being only about 30 years old, soccer in South Africa is very popular, and therefore, the country has some pretty impressive soccer stadiums. This is mainly because they hosted the World Cup in 2010 when some of them were built, but this actually does not make them less thrilling. So, let’s take a look at some of the best Mzanzi soccer grounds.

FNB Stadium, Johannesburg

Formerly known as Soccer City, this is one of the largest stadiums in South Africa and is home to the Kaizer Chiefs. It was built in 1987 but underwent a major upgrade for the 2010 World Cup. Nowadays, its capacity is just over 95,000 people. Its record attendance was documented on 1 August 2015, when almost 96,000 watched the Kaizer Chiefs vs. Orlando Pirates.

Cape Town Stadium

Built in 2009 for the 2010 World Cup, this stadium, located in Cape Town, is the home ground for four professional sports clubs – 2 soccer teams and 2 from the rugby league. Since 2010, the stadium hosted numerous events, including five World Cup matches, the World Rugby sevens series and numerous international soccer friendlies.

Moses Mabhida Stadium, Durban

Another newly built soccer stadium is the home of the Premier League Amazulu and the South African national soccer team. What’s interesting about it is that its capacity can be adjusted by adding more seats, ranging between 55,000 for local matches and 75,000 for international events.

Loftun Versfeld Stadium, Pretoria

We just cannot skip the most titled team stadium—Loftun Versfeld Stadium in Pretoria. It is home to the soccer Mamelodi Sundowns and the rugby league Blue Bulls. Despite its altitude of 1350 meters above sea level, it hosted the 1995 Rugby World Cup and the 2010 FIFA World Cup opening round games.

Orlando Stadium, Johannesburg

This multi-purpose stadium in Gauteng province in Johannesburg is home to one of the most successful soccer teams: Orlando Pirates. Like some of the other South African stadiums on the list, Orlando was rebuilt for the 2010 FIFA World Cup, and since then, it has also hosted the Nedbank Cup and MTN 8 Cup finals.

PSL Betting Tips

If you are just starting your betting journey, don’t let yourself be overwhelmed. While there is a lot you need to know to be successful in your soccer predictions for South Africa, some tips can help you get a grip quicker:

Pay attention to the weather and attitude

It’s not a surprise to anyone that sometimes South African weather can be harsh. Since the PSL is played with an August-May cycle, the teams have scheduled matches during both hot summer and heavy rain periods, which may affect performance. In addition, there are regions with high altitudes, so research the data to see if you should expect some impact on the players.

Analyse key players' impact

Many South African players have significant impacts on overall team performance. For instance, Themba Zwane from Mamelodi Sundowns. Analyse all the data you can lay your hands on to identify these key players in every team you are interested in. This can help you spot trends or predict reduced performance.

Keep a closer eye on the fixtures

There are several periods during the season that you can expect to be busier, especially if the team is involved in the local cup games or CAF competitions. Too many back-to-back matches can lead to fatigue since not many South African clubs have enough squad depth. Our advice is to check if the team has enough equal players to be rotated on the field for each; otherwise, you risk some unexpected losses.
